Foundlings

Some results of my explorations in the 3D jungle of 123D Catch. Aside processing photo's to 3D models, 123D Catch is also a platform where users can share their created 3D models. The platform seems to stimulate remixing each other work or improve it. Apparently babies are rather popular under the users. So here is a first attempt to remix them.

PRICCAPractice

My recent work in progress 'Data Sets' is part of the group exhibition 'Photo's that research photo's. The exhibition is the first project of the new expertise centre about photography PRICCAPractice. PRICCAPractice stands for Photographic Research in Cross-disciplinary and Cross-cultural Artistic Practices.
Data Sets is are 3D portraits of my grandmother and father. The portraits are created with photogrammetry algorithms that extract spatial data from a series of photo's of the same object. Today the technology becomes increasingly popular because of new cloud services such as 123D Catch and Recap. I am interested in the expressive and aesthetic properties of the these technologies, and to which extend they represent reality.

During the opening my new 'work in progress' installation 'Color by Numbers' kicked off. The installation is inspired by the world famous 'Paint by Numbers' hobby paint products. The photoprint is an enlarged photo originally taken by Turkia Mahmud, during the Libyan civil war, after Gaddafi got killed. The visitor is invited to participate in the creation of a new colorful Playmais painting. Below some pictures.

The Tower, Reconnecting People

Last December 2011 we exposed the Tower in an empty store close to the new Zaailand. A new shopping area im the centre of Leeuwarden in Fryslan. Interested passants were invited to register themselves in this Tower store. Based on the answers of 8 questions, the installation calculates your postition on the square of the virtual Zaailand. The groups of people that are formed by the system are invited to come back during the opening of the actual new Zaailand in September 2012. Every group will be photographed at the new square. The Tower, Reconnecting People was part of the temporary exhibition Copy:Paste

The Geocities of Things

Already a month ago I visited the conference day of the STRP Festival in Eindhoven. There was one lecture I enjoyed a lot. Russel Davies, a team-member of the RIG, presented his playfull crititque about The Internet of Things, which he called the Geocities of Things. Check his blog for an article about this! Some examples he showed were the hilarious Halloween Light Shows. And this one because its Christmas :-)
