A 3D reconstruction of the Norwegian island Utøya. The model is made by the analysis of arial photo's of the island. I found the photo's on Panoramio, the geolocation and photo sharing website of Google. The photo's are taken by fly-photographer Lasse Tur.

IslandCQ 2013

Just found this picture. It was during the last edition of IslandCQ in May 2013 in the old Monotori Fortress in Hungary Komárom close to the Hungarian and Slovakian border. The Monostori Fortress was built between 1850 and 1871 to defend Hungary against Turkish invaders and was used as an enormous ammunition storage facility by the Soviets, after the Second World War. Nowadays a part of it is open for public as a museum. This isolated and historical rich location was the ideal background for the 2013 edition's theme ‘Crisis! -RE/Constructing Europe’.
IslandCQ is a 10-day, location based, international art, media, and technology exchange project that facilitates workshops, lectures, exhibitions, concerts, and performances, developed and organised by students from the various partner universities from Finland, Latvia, Hungary, Belgium, and the Netherlands. IslandCQ is initiated by Minerva Academy of Popculture and developed as an Intensive program partly financed by Erasmus, and consisted of 3 editions organised in 3 different countries between 2010 and 2013. My task was to develop the concepts and the main program.

Reconstructing the WWWorld

A great piece by Marnix de Nijs. How to reconstruct 3D city landscapes from photo collections provided by users of social media websites like Flickr. As a spectator you are able to phsyically navigate through the urban environments projected on a large screen by moving your body. What do these reconstructions tell us about reality?

Some results of my explorations in the 3D jungle of 123D Catch. Aside processing photo's to 3D models, 123D Catch is also a platform where users can share their created 3D models. The platform seems to stimulate remixing each other work or improve it. Apparently babies are rather popular under the users. So here is a first attempt to remix them. 

PRICCAPractice

My recent work in progress 'Data Sets' is part of the group exhibition 'Photo's that research photo's. The exhibition is the first project of the new expertise centre about photography PRICCAPractice. PRICCAPractice stands for Photographic Research in Cross-disciplinary and Cross-cultural Artistic Practices. 

Data Sets is are 3D portraits of my grandmother and father. The portraits are created with photogrammetry algorithms that extract spatial data from a series of photo's of the same object. Today the technology becomes increasingly popular because of new cloud services such as 123D Catch and Recap. I am interested in the expressive and aesthetic properties of the these technologies, and to which extend they represent reality.

3D Print Survival Kit @ IWEEK

Last week I hosted a 3D printing workshop during the IWEEK at Art&Research Lab (MPLab) in Liepaja Latvia. The design challenge was to develop a survival kit that can be used within an environment or context, specified by the participants. The results where: The Ultimate Survival Kit, The Last Hope Survival Kit, and the Knuckle Tagger Survival Kit.
